The historical birthplace of this plant – China. In Japan, this tree arrived from China and also deserved recognition for its unique qualities, becoming a symbol of luck. In Europe, the tree was brought with von Zybold. The European name appeared on behalf of the Queen of the Netherlands, Anna Pavlovna Romanova. Because the name «Anna» already was «booked» at that time, a unique tree was called paulownia (by patronymic).
In Japan, a new name fell in love and was also accepted. And the special properties of this tree are estimated so highly that its image is on the emblem of the imperial family. What is this tree so fond of all?
First, this is a phenomenal growth rate. At an average annual temperature of +8 ° C it is 3-5 meters per year. Even to the north, (average annual rate + 3°C), this figure will be 2 - 2.5 m per year. For 8 years you can expect 1m3 meter of wood. A high growth rate of the root system helps protect large areas from soil erosion. We add here the opportunity to grow paulownia on low-fertility soils and the need for watering only the first two years after planting. Not only that – after cutting down the eight-year trunks, the growth of new trunks starts from the site of the cut. The root system undergoes 5-8 regeneration cycles.
With surprising growth rates, the quality of wood does not cease to amaze. The weight of wood is 208-300 kg/m3. At the same time, high strength indicators, which makes paulownia very popular in aircraft construction, shipbuilding, and surfboard manufacturing.
Excellent quality of wood itself (knots and other defects are rare) and ease of processing make it a welcome material for furniture production, veneer production, and musical instruments. The musical instruments from paulownia have an excellent sound.
The assembly process is simplified by the fact that nails and screws are well entered into this wood and then retained. Pre-drilling is not required.
Simultaneously, the temperature at which the paulownia burns up 400°C, which is higher than in other breeds (250-300). That's why the Japanese wardrobes made from this tree, because they had more chances not to burn during the fire.
Excellent thermal and sound-insulating qualities allow this wood to be used for plating of living quarters. And now add here the resistance to water and get a universal building material for housing. After contact with water, the product does not swell, does not lose shape, does not rot. In the process, the use does not gain water, its shrinkage coefficient is within the range of 0.1-0.31% (less than any coniferous and deciduous breed). Plus a weak absorption of varnishes, paints, which reduces processing costs.
Amazing resistance to termites, beetle bugs, due to high tannin content.
But this is not only an excellent building material. It is called paulownia "oil well". The latest developments of American scientists allow from 1 ton of wood to receive 511 liters of ethanol, which is perfectly suitable for heating. But this need not be done, you can buy paulownia for creating heating briquettes, since it is distinguished by the highest level of calorific value - 20.3 MJ/kg.
At the time of flowering a tree is of interest to beekeepers. Honey collected from these flowers is light, like honey from acacia. Represent the value also also the leaves of this tree. They surprise not only in size up to 70 cm, but also nutrition for herbivores. The composition is similar to that of alfalfa – about 20% protein in the fresh state and 12% after the falling of the leaves.
The company «Comprehensive AgroService» offers to buy the paulownia seedlings.
